One day I was sitting in my second hour sociology class and we were having a discussion about how would we, as a class describe our own generation. We had answers that the class would generally agree with like coddled, anxious, and accepting. Yet there was one suggestion that did not mesh well with me, being “worldly”. First off, her definition did not match the actual definition of the word, which is sophisticated and or experienced. What she thought it meant was we care about the world and other countries aside from our own more. I did not agree with this because looking around the room I did not think anyone in the room aside from me and maybe two other people actually attempted to keep up with current events. This made me want to study this, and well here we are. So I set out on a quest to see how well Brodhead High School knew current events.

I started out with a simple question, do you attempt to keep up with current events? Nearly everybody said yes or at least they attempted, with the acception of Tristan who hit me with the hard no. I then proceeded to ask where did they learn about current events from primarily. One person stated from the actual news, and the majority said from the internet, except for Tristan again how proceed to say, “I get all of my news from memes, and they seem to be pretty accurate”.

After this I decided to quiz them on some actual news, anything from the past year from Brexit, to Trump, to the olympics going on now. Surprisingly, I had a lot more correct responses to the questions opposed to how I accepted things to go. Half of the sample pool I had knew what Brexit was and the overwhelming majority knew that the olympics were being held in Korea, even though most stated the wrong one, it was still closer than Liz who somehow mustered up her thoughts and said with overwhelming confidence “Greece”, even though i previously stated they were going on at the time of publication, in winter.

Overall I had discovered that we as a school district do not tend to keep up with current events. This is why I decided to dig further and interview Mr. Geocks, the person in the school who I know pushes watching the news the most. He believes it is important and stated this, “So nightmares from around the world do not come here, and so we know how things happening in the government can effect us”.

We should, as a school, start paying attention. If we do not we loose focus from our surroundings. That is why we should pay attention more, and if we do not, we will just repeat our past.
